- OUTDATED POST FAQ Concerning JSU students
Do JSU students have coronavirus/COVID-19? No. Two commuter students have been exposed off-campus and are not symptomatic at this time. To our knowledge, we do not have a person on campus exposed to COVID-19. Should my student come home/should I go home? At this time, there is no known increased risk on campus, and classes are continuing. However, students who are sick should not attend class, so that they are not spreading a cold, the flu, or other illnesses. Cleaned campus? JSU began in early February doing additional cleaning due to flu season. We are now doing targeted deep cleaning in the classrooms/buildings where the two students attended class. Should I attend class/come back to class? If you are healthy, you should continue to attend class. If you are not healthy, you should seek medical attention and stay home. Is it in the residence halls? The two students who were exposed off campus are commuter students, and they were not in the residence halls. What buildings? The two students who were exposed off campus attended class in Ayers Hall, Houston Cole Library, Martin Hall, and Stone Center. These buildings were targeted for deeper cleaning with bleach, and this special treatment will be completed by Saturday morning. Were students informed? Faculty and students who were in class with the two students were informed on Friday, March 6—either via their JSU email or in person in class. Are classes cancelled? No, JSU will be conducting normal operations. There is no reason to believe campus is not safe and we are continuing cleaning/disinfecting practices. Are events cancelled? Students should monitor the CDC and State Department websites for travel advisories. Will I get updates? Yes, we will keep students, faculty, and staff updated via the JSU website.

Today we received information from Jacksonville State University in regards to two students being exposed to COVID-19: "While there are no confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the State of Alabama nor on JSU’s campus, the administration is committed to keeping our university community informed. We received notice today that two JSU students have come into contact with someone in Georgia diagnosed with COVID-19. This possible contact occurred six days ago, out-of-state, and the JSU students have no symptoms of COVID-19. Although the students did attend classes after the exposure, they are not currently on campus. We are working proactively with the Alabama Department of Public Health to protect our campus and community and taking necessary precautions. If the situation changes, we will notify campus. - Acting President, Dr. Don Killingsworth, Jr." We, Calhoun County EMA, are working alongside Jacksonville State University and the local community to take necessary precautions.

*Note that this is outdated information* WHAT WE KNOW: The Department of Health and Human Services plans to house passengers from the Diamond Princess Cruise ship at the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) These patients have been on the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship in Japan. These patients have tested positive for the virus BUT have no or mild flu like symptoms. These patients are ALREADY in the United States and are currently being housed on Department of Defense instillation. Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) were notified at approximately 12:30 pm today by local media that these patients we coming to Anniston. Calhoun County EMA has not been made aware of the number of passengers that are to be housed at the CDP Since that time, we have been in contact with the Center for Domestic Preparedness and the U.S. Health and Human Services. They have ensured us that the patients will be quarantined to a facility at the Center for Domestic Preparedness and that no one will leave the facility until they are cleared by onsite medial officials. The Department of Health and Human Resources tells us that there is no threat to the local communities in Calhoun County. HHS and CDP have not shared the plan for a person that needs to be transported to a hospital. Calhoun County Commission plans to file an injunction with the Federal Government to prevent any passengers from the Diamond Princess from being quarantined in Calhoun County at the Center for Domestic Preparedness. Calhoun County EMA will continue to be in contact with federal officials through the duration of this event. Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency is working with local, state and Federal Governments, public safety and healthcare partners and the Alabama Department of Public Health to ensure the safety of the all Calhoun County Residents PREPAREDNESS: Outbreaks of viral infections among people are always a public health concern and are dependent on a number of factors (CDC source). Examples could include many different types of illnesses such as influenza (flu), the recently known coronavirus, among many others. The new program will allow groups such as, churches, businesses, non-profits, schools, and government offices to go through preparedness activities in a concise and self paced program.
